1 in 3 shoppers expect retailers to move at social media speed as viral demand reshapes retail

New invent.ai research finds 61% of consumers are frustrated when retailers fail to anticipate demand, while 59% say viral trends cause products to sell out faster.

PHILADELPHIA — June 22, 2026 — Invent.ai, a global leader in retail inventory optimization and multi-agentic AI, highlights new research showing that consumers increasingly expect retailers to react to trends, launch products and manage inventory at social media speed.

The research found that one in three consumers (29%) now expect retailers to launch new products more quickly because of social media, while 37% expect brands to introduce new products more frequently than they did just two years ago. Among Millennials, that figure rises to 46%.

As social media continues to accelerate product discovery and influence purchasing decisions, retailers face growing pressure to anticipate demand shifts, maintain product availability and respond faster to changing consumer preferences.

Nearly six in ten consumers (59%) say viral social trends cause products to sell out faster than they used to, while 53% say influencers and content creators accelerate how quickly products disappear from shelves. Additionally, 24% say brands that launch products more frequently are more likely to experience faster sellouts.

"Retail is operating at the speed of social media, where consumer attention, demand and purchasing behavior can change almost instantly," said Gurhan Kok, Founder and CEO of invent.ai. "The organizations that succeed will be the ones that can continuously adapt to those changes while maintaining a seamless customer experience."

The findings also show rising consumer expectations around inventory availability. More than six in ten shoppers (61%) become frustrated when retailers fail to anticipate demand for popular products, while 53% believe retailers are not using data effectively to manage inventory and availability.

Consumers increasingly expect retailers to use technology to address these challenges. Nearly half (49%) believe retailers should use AI to better predict demand and prevent out-of-stocks, while 65% expect retailers to use technology to keep popular products in stock. Additionally, 18% want retailers to use AI to help smooth demand fluctuations caused by viral trends.

As demand becomes more dynamic, retailers need to continuously evaluate changing demand patterns and align inventory decisions accordingly. Without the ability to respond to shifts in consumer behavior, retailers risk lost sales, excess inventory and declining customer satisfaction.

"This isn't just about reacting faster," Kok added. "It's about building a retail organization that can make better decisions in a constantly changing environment. As demand becomes more dynamic, adaptability becomes a competitive advantage."

The findings are based on an online survey of more than 1,000 consumers conducted in April 2026 on behalf of invent.ai.
